All work and lots of play

Thought i'd post some of the stuff I am working on at the moment. I really wanted to update my first year reel project from school and I have gone back and started work on that.
The main creature I have gone back and started reworking the major forms, working out better muscle structure before jumping into any of the details. Still have to tweak the hands and feet and hind legs, but the rest is about there.
Then also being playing with the environment which has been fun, still have a few odds and ends to wrap up before the fun of texturing starts. I will be keeping the same camera moves that  I originally setup, has been great fun playing with this again.

I also included the original shots from my first year reel.

Also I have a quick sketch of a creepy bug that I did before bed, might continue developing it for fun to see where it leads.

Til next time

There and back again

Back from a very cool time in wellington, had such an amazing experience and I got to meet and work with many super talented people.
Managed to pop along to the book signing of the the White clouds Worlds volume2 at the weta cave, a great chance to meet some more wicked artists. I recommend picking up a copy if you love good art books

Now I am back and itching to start making some new work, wondering where to start...so to kick things off I thought I would jump back onto a script I started writing while I was studying, a little short film idea which I hope I can flesh out.

I also want to update my 1st year reel to a more professional looking piece of work, which is in the works at the moment.

So much to do, and never enough time to do it all in...next update will be pictures and not so much of me blabbering on.

Leaving on an airplane

No rest for the wicked, about to head back on down to Wellington for some more contract work for another month, which is great, trying to soak up as much experience as I can, and the opportunities have been great so far. I have a feeling Nov and Dec might be a bit on the quite side...I hope not..bit hard to judge when entering a new industry.

Anyways I will be without my comp for a month so I brought a brand spanking new sketchbook to take down with me and hopefully fill by the time I get back.  Hopefully I have time to track down some super sculpty, I really want to have a go of normal sculpting, but that might just have to wait until I get back.

Home sweet home?

Well it has been an exciting time for me since my last post, I have just gotten back from a freelance job down in Wellington, not any old freelance job...but my very first as a 3d artist.
I had a great time down working Sauce , it was for a small contract job that was only going to be a couple weeks of work which ended extending out to just over a month which was nice.

I also won myself a free ticket to the last day of the ConceptDesignWorkshop that was going on down there at the time. The one day workshop was with  Robh Ruppel which was awesome, it is always great being surround by some many talented artists. I would have really like to have gone to the entire workshop, so I will have to start saving my pennies for next year.

Anyways lots to do, job hunting and making some more art work

Not all fire and Brimstone

These were just some quick studies, bottom two were from photos. Done in Photoshop

Blast from the past

Been cleaning out folders trying to free up some extra hard drive space and ended up finding some of my drawings from when I started on conceptart.org. This is only a small sample of some of the weekly comps that I used to do after work when I had the time.

Top one was for Chow201_Andromeda, it was interesting trying to draw a woman, usually I was drawing creatures most of the time :) Think this was done in 2010

The one below was for the Newborn Competition on Conceptart.org back in 2009

And the guys below that were more from 2009

First Year Production

Final concepts and still from my first year production at Media Design School. Currently updating this production in between other exercises at the moment with all the new skills I have learned from the second year, should be pretty bad ass when it is completed.

Hannibal Lecter

This fun little sculpt was made for our Mudbox class at school. We had to find a person to make a caricature of. Sculpted and textured in Mudbox then retopologized in Maya and rendered with Mental Ray.  Definitely going to go back and rework some areas and play more with the SSS on this.

2d Design Work

Here are the final poster designs I did for the short films we made and their concepts.

Funeral Home Pinatas

This is some of the work I did on the short film Funeral Home Pinatas. This was our 2nd final production at Media Design School. There was 4 of us in our team and we had 8 weeks to make a full cgi short.

I worked on Character design, modelling and texturing for Larry and the Pinata and the texturing on the Widow which was designed and modelled by Jake Tuck.
I also did the design work on the Larry funeral Home Logo, Infomercial screen and the poster design.

Here is the link to the film in case you haven't seen it

White Cloud Workshop

I attended the Concept Design workshop run by Paul Tobin and Warren Mahy from Weta. It was an amazing two day workshop. There was also a zbrush one run at the same time by Scott Spencer that I would have loved to go to as well...hopefully next time.

Artifact Comp

These were for my entry to a competition on NZCGI, It was run when I was in production at school so I could only spare a few nights I had to do it in. I ended up submitting my unfinished entry and won. I was the proud owner of The Art of Tin Tin book and I got a signed print from Paul Tobin.
