Basically a short film idea, which I am keen to give a go win or lose. But there is a lot of ground work to put in first, but will keep the updates from it rolling on this site as well. Really keen to work personal film, and it has been a few years since the last one. Did some more work on the x-wing, will post up some more photos during the week, just been putting together the main sections, then the plan is to spray a base coat before getting into some serious painting.

For now here is work in progress on the 40k marine, wil lbe a few months before I get back to working on this as I stumbled across a art competition (Retrogasm Art Competition) that I am going to have a go at. Taking a retro game and updating the character, my pick was Arthur from Ghost n Goblins.

So some new wips will be gracing this blog soon

So I scrapped part of the chest piece and integrated part of Dark Angel design into it, which works much better than just the eagle. Also playing around with some secondary decorations on the chest armor which I will scrap to re introduce some more warhammer-ish designs
Will be taking photos of the progress, as a record of where I end up screwing the model up, haven't made one of these since I was a little kid :)

Anyways I really want to have more finished art this year, so to start it of here is a unfinished piece :P
This was for a Darkstalkers comp on facebook 3d Anime challenge.

Was a good learning cure, getting a better character pipeline going, still got a few tweaks to sort out. Upgraded to Zbrush R7, still haven't had a chance to play with any of the new goodies, will have to se some time aside for that.

Here is some images that I forgot to throw up here, just wips as usual. work is slowly progressing with the 40k guy, just been setting up shaders, looking forward to showing it off in the new year

1st one was some colour concepts for my bug alien, still got a couple more to do before rolling it out.

2nd is a update for the Cuthulu bust I was doing, changed his head since it was very generic

3rd, rough chest piece to the 40k space marine I am making

Tonight was jumping back into texturing and setting up some test shaders. Trying to look dev a more illustration feel to the model, with play with this for a bit, hopefully if will work out. Not sure how well hair will go with this style but I guess that is all part of the experiment.

I find I keep painting out the brush strokes from over working it, this is a rough base which I will refine if this works outAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17836637224512553175noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4158624753176837233.post-73023455713801755752014-09-01T04:22:00.003-07:002014-09-01T04:23:14.849-07:00TextureTestingback on this guy again, just started to making some custom brushes for some acne scar textures, been using Jürgen Prochnow for skin reference, got a sudden feeling to watch Das Boot again, great film.
I picked up a camera towards the end of summer and have out making the most of it. Nice little Canon camera, really good to have one again after selling my first one to pay bills while I was studying.

Anyways taken a break from Mr Marine, and been just doing some zbrush sketches, here is one of the ones I have carried through. He is going to posed like those old civil war portrait paintings.
It has been a nice relaxing process just chilling out making something without trying to rush it.

The Mat cap material is from Kurt Papstein tutorial, it is really nice to sculpt with - def check it out
So I am can hopefully put a little animated shot together which should be fun.

Currently I am trying to track down a artist of a reference image I have been using, so if you happen to know who it is drop me a line so I can credit them.

Here is the image that I am using as a reference CLICK HERE

Here is my current wip.

Also I am recoding the process and will put it up on youtube when it is done.
We got pretty busy at work during the 2nd hobbit movie so I had to sideline this, hopefully there will be some time to finish it off this year.

I picked the alien from Battle For L.A. had some pretty cool shape design that I could play with, and also some great asymmetry.
This was a tight deadline, I think I had a month and a half, starting
just before Christmas and finishing just after the holidays. That include pre-prod through to finish comp and renders.

This was one of the far shots where this guys is trying to play football just after taking acid
There were three shots like this it would cut back to during the sequence. So cg flower, animated to match the grass getting blown in the wind

This next shot the daisy would smile and flutter her eye lashes while swaying away. If there was more time I would have loved to make some grass to sit in better with the shot. Went through a couple of variations on the textures, was fun trying to get the right balance for a nice cute face.

After cutting back to another close up, something obvious is happening with her, and she twitches possessed and morphs into a evil daisy that has some very pleasant dialogue about eating souls before cutting away again. I never had tried doing a morphing character before and that was great fun, my old comp at the time didn't think so with blending of all the texture maps.

I got one of my friends to work on the closeup animation while I could concentrate on textures and shaders. Here is a little shot of the rig, I had a sitwch in the head control which would switch between the happy and evil daisy.

Plan is to have a very productive year for 2014, I am all settled into my new home now down in Wellington, which is a awesome city. I have a few new models to update on the page, and about to kick of with a new soon.

This year I really want to get into some streaming work, 2d and 3d, hopefully something entertaining for people, and also a bunch of studies, quick sculpts of animals and objects, also some cinematography studies.

I'm think of starting the year off on characters then switching it over to environments later in the year, and then maybe combine them up, well we shall see how it goes.

Kick things off with some really interesting cinematography links that I stumbled across today

Well better get to it :)
I had the wicked disgusting head reference from this creature, I know I want it to fly so maybe it will be like a vulture.

Will do a couple of paint over tonight I think, to try some different desgins, so I can progress with it at lunch tomorrow
It was great meeting so many cool student film makers and the wicked guest judge Chris ‘Doc’ Wyatt, producer of 2004 cult hit Napoleon Dynamite.
Well still job hunting and making new work for a new demo reel.

I finished the main part of my script writing course, and have the entire layout of the movie sorted, im sure it will be tweaked during re-writes. I have started the first proper draft and I am 20 pages in. It was originally going to be a short film, but my friend has got me writing it as a feature, so only another 100 pages to go :)

Here is an update on my post apoc entry for cghub, I missed the deadline, but I didn't want to rush it so I can have some high quality work for my portfolio. I am enjoying how it is turning out so far, still have a few areas to clean up. I tried transposing the hands in zbrush but it was taking to long, so I zipped the hand across to maya and threw some joints in to making posing easier.

On a side note, the short films we made for school have been doing well on the film fest circuit which is great, and Funeral Home Pinatas is in Annecy Festival (France), Melbourne International Animated Festival (Australia) and Uni Shorts (New Zealand) 2013.
Carrying on with post apoc character, should have the last of the props finished tomorrow, with some pose tests, I was originally thinking have her with rifle slung, standing reading a map, but know unsure if she should be carrying the rifle walking instead..guess will find out in the tests. want to have the modelling all finished up this week, posed then ready for painting and rendering over the weekend and next week.

I did a concept art test last week which was fun, first time I have ever done that before, crazy to see how quickly time fly past when you are working have to go back and start doing some more speed painting exercises again.

Time for sleep, it is nearly 3 in the morning and I just want to keep going.....gotta put the wacom pen down now..night all

Oh here is an update, of where she is up to at the mo.
So I have got my main characters, got the world they live in written up, will be setting up the treatment this week.

3d wise, I have tidied up the mad scientist guy, but he is on hold as I found a 3d comp over at cghub to enter to start getting my name out in some forums and of course more stuff to add to my portfolio.
Been wanting to get in and learn some more features in zbrush, so using the comp as a good time for that. Qmesher, sculpting wrinkles and creases (need more practice), shadowbox etc.

I wanted my post apoc character to be inspired by Dayz ( check it out, created by a kiwi), I really wanted to make a fan art piece for it, and with this come I can kill two birds with one stone.

The AK is still waiting for it's spec map, which I plan to get onto this week, then should have that ready to render and turntable set.

week 2 of script writing was really cool, it was on character development. It was quite interesting to see that very similar to the way I do character design, except a lot more detailed. My home work this week is to essentially do the character sheets for all the main characters for the live action film I want to make, as well as the world they live in. If I get time I might roll it through to the cg short I want to make starring this guy right here.

He is still in design phase, but when I originally drew up the first one (guy on far left) I also build a little story to go with him that I thought might make a cool little film.

We also got a new addition to the flat, two little kittens, so I have been baby sitting those little fellas...photos coming soon.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17836637224512553175noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4158624753176837233.post-24568688941587349032013-03-03T19:18:00.004-08:002013-03-03T19:18:54.480-08:00CreativityA great link that I was sent about John Cleese giving a lecture on creativity, very good watch
some more work, but has left me more time for making more things.

I have also started my script writing course, that a friends of mine is taking me through, which is fun. I am sure it is going to help with a couple I have that will pimp the stories out.

Been learning a lot with using Mari, wasn't to sure about it when I first started using it, but now I am in the flow of it, it is a really fun application to use. I am currently writing the diary accounts that go on the stock of the rifle, then apply the bump maps to the tape and handle, finish of the dirt pass and then spec maps.
There are a few issues I have noticed every now and then and that is the cursor disappearing when going to palettes which is annoying, especially when it de-selects your objects when you are trying to get the cursor to appear in the windows.

Here is a sneak peak

Also was testing out a base mesh in zbrush, I was originally just sculpting a bust, bust as I was thinking about the character I decided to do a full character, going to try and do a realistic character, props will be done after his costume is done.

Here are some wip shots

Been watching the new season of Face Off, such a good show, surprised it isn't on a normal time here. that if they are still showing it on tv.

Thought I would use it as a fun little exercise between other projects, really wanted to get in and do some more drawing. Anyways the first episode was making a Goblin King, so here is a portrait shot of my lovely up and coming king.
Working on a full figure picture at the moment with costume, my try and do a front and back designs.

Then will take it and sculpt him up.

It is funny how ideas come about, as soon as I started playing with putting type on the stock of the rifle I remembered a part of a book I read called Enemy at the Gates, basically a group of Russian soldiers were surrounded and pretty much fought to the last man, but one of them carved his last words into a rock I think, which the still have to this day in a museum. Always find that pretty haunting.

So I wanted the same thing, so I had the idea of putting diary entries written straight onto the stock of the rifle. So it would be the persons legacy after they were killed....turns it more into a artifact which is kinda nice.

So bottom right one I am going for.
