Todays lunch update...trying to make it a lot creepier and freaky looking

Lunch sketch

During my lunch break from texturing today, thought I would do a little zbrush sculpting. I had the wicked disgusting head reference from this creature, I know I want it to fly so maybe it will be like a vulture.

Will do a couple of paint over tonight I think, to try some different desgins, so I can progress with it at lunch tomorrow

Uni shorts film fest 2013

We went to the Uni shorts film fest yesterday, and ended up winning best animation category for Funeral Home Pinatas, which was awesome. It was great meeting so many cool student film makers and the wicked guest judge Chris ‘Doc’ Wyatt, producer of 2004 cult hit Napoleon Dynamite.

It's been ages

Man, its been ages since I last updated this. Well still job hunting and making new work for a new demo reel.

I finished the main part of my script writing course, and have the entire layout of the movie sorted, im sure it will be tweaked during re-writes. I have started the first proper draft and I am 20 pages in. It was originally going to be a short film, but my friend has got me writing it as a feature, so only another 100 pages to go :)

Here is an update on my post apoc entry for cghub,  I missed the deadline, but I didn't want to rush it so I can have some high quality work for my portfolio. I am enjoying how it is turning out so far, still have a few areas to clean up. I tried transposing the hands in zbrush but it was taking to long, so I zipped the hand across to maya and threw some joints in to making posing easier.

On a side note, the short films we made for school have been doing well on the film fest circuit which is great, and Funeral Home Pinatas is in Annecy Festival (France), Melbourne International Animated Festival (Australia) and Uni Shorts (New Zealand) 2013.

Hello Monday

Start of another action packed week, back flying into again. Carrying on with post apoc character, should have the last of the props finished tomorrow, with some pose tests, I was originally thinking have her with rifle slung, standing reading a map, but know unsure if she should be carrying the rifle walking instead..guess will find out in the tests. want to have the modelling all finished up this week, posed then ready for painting and rendering over the weekend and next week.

I did a concept art test last week which was fun, first time I have ever done that before, crazy to see how quickly time fly past when you are working have to go back and start doing some more speed painting exercises again.

Time for sleep, it is nearly 3 in the morning and I just want to keep going.....gotta put the wacom pen down now..night all

Oh here is an update, of where she is up to at the mo.

More than enough

Bit of a quite week work wise, so more time for practicing, finished third week of the scripting writing course, going over 3 act structure, and the break down of The Heroes Journey, and started noticing it a lot more in the films I watch. So I have got my main characters, got the world they live in written up, will be setting up the treatment this week.

3d wise, I have tidied up the mad scientist guy, but he is on hold as I found a 3d comp over at cghub to enter to start getting my name out in some forums and of course more stuff to add to my portfolio.
Been wanting to get in and learn some more features in zbrush, so using the comp as a good time for that. Qmesher, sculpting wrinkles and creases (need more practice), shadowbox etc.

I wanted my post apoc character to be inspired by Dayz ( check it out, created by a kiwi), I really wanted to make a fan art piece for it, and with this come I can kill two birds with one stone.

The AK is still waiting for it's spec map, which I plan to get onto this week, then should have that ready to render and turntable set.

Hmmmm

Hey guys, quick update.

week 2 of script writing was really cool, it was on character development. It was quite interesting to see that very similar to the way I do character design, except a lot more detailed. My home work this week is to essentially do the character sheets for all the main characters for the live action film  I want to make, as well as the world they live in. If I get time I might roll it through to the cg short I want to make starring this guy right here.

He is still in design phase, but when I originally drew up the first one (guy on far left) I also build a little story to go with him that I thought might make a cool little film.

We also got a new addition to the flat, two little kittens, so I have been baby sitting those little fellas...photos coming soon.

Quick update

Here is a quick update on the character, still trying to get the wrinkles in the overalls looking nicer.. Might have to find some more reference for them, been boncing between a few I already have, but it is still not looking right.

Practice, practice, practice

Well it has been a busy week in some aspects, still trying to pick up some more work, but has left me more time for making more things.

I have also started my script writing course, that a friends of mine is taking me through, which is fun. I am sure it is going to help with a couple I have that will pimp the stories out.

Been learning a lot with using Mari, wasn't to sure about it when I first started using it, but now I am in the flow of it, it is a really fun application to use. I am currently writing the diary accounts that go on the stock of the rifle, then apply the bump maps to the tape and handle, finish of the dirt pass and then spec maps.
There are a few issues I have noticed every now and then and that is the cursor disappearing when going to palettes which is annoying, especially when it de-selects your objects when you are trying to get the cursor to appear in the windows.

Here is a sneak peak

Also was testing out a base mesh in zbrush, I was originally just sculpting a bust, bust as I was thinking about the character I decided to do a full character, going to try and do a realistic character, props will be done after his costume is done.

Here are some wip shots

Face Off

*Texturing is coming along in Mari for the ak, quite a cool program to use, still getting the hang of the multiple channels and shaders...hopefully have some renders to show off soon.

Been watching the new season of Face Off, such a good show, surprised  it isn't on a normal time here. that if they are still showing it on tv.

Thought I would use it as a fun little exercise between other projects, really wanted to get in and do some more drawing. Anyways the first episode was making a Goblin King, so here is a portrait shot of my lovely up and coming king.
Working on a full figure picture at the moment with costume, my try and do a front and back designs.

Then will take it and sculpt him up.

Texture Concepts

Busy weekend, but managed to get the AK texture concepts done, so already to rock and roll.
It is funny how ideas come about, as soon as I started playing with putting type on the stock of the rifle I remembered a part of a book I read called Enemy at the Gates, basically a group of Russian soldiers were surrounded and pretty much fought to the last man, but one of them carved his last words into a rock I think, which the still have to this day in a museum. Always find that pretty haunting.

So I wanted the same thing, so I had the idea of putting diary entries written straight onto the stock of the rifle. So it would be the persons legacy after they were killed....turns it more into a artifact which is kinda nice.

So bottom right one I am going for.

AK Update

The Ak is pretty much done now, went back and re-did some parts I wasn't happy with. I really don't like the fore-grip from the reference I was using, bloody ugly so I changed it, I will go back and model a rail system for it when I go to use it with a character.

I am about half way through with the uv's, plan is to have it all wrapped up tonight. Really looking forward to texturing this sucker up.

Wips

So just about finished my little hard surface project. Though I would have a go at a gun since I have never made one before. So I picked one of my favorites, the Ak-74M, should have it wrapped up by tomorrow and uv'd and ready for some texturing later this week.

At least it will give me a good excuse to make a character to go along with the gun

Also did a quick sketch in the weekend, and thought I might use it as my organic project, going to go back through refine it and clean it up.

Happy New Year everyone

I hope everyone had a good holiday break, well I managed to get a gig on a nz film called CrackHeads, making some cg sequences for a scene when some guys drop some acid. Just waiting to hear back from the director to see when I can post up some of the work I did for it.

It was a really fun job to to, working through the pipeline from design through to the final comps.

Anyways onto the next bit of work....been hanging out to learn Mari and now is the time to strike, so plan is to make a organic  and a hard surface model and use those as my test subjects.
